Why Sharing Gender Pronouns Matters

Posted by Anna Traugh on July 29, 2021

Gender pronouns are words that a person would like others to use when talking to or about them. Nothing may be more personal than how people refer to us through our names and pronouns. Using a person’s chosen name and desired pronouns is a form of mutual respect and basic courtesy. Celebrating diversity and welcoming all individuals is something that Cornerstone holds in high regard.

By sharing gender pronouns as a company, we aim to open the door for individuals who may identify outside of ‘he’ or ‘she’ to feel comfortable sharing their personal pronouns. In addition to creating an inclusive space for customers, clients, and coworkers, sharing gender pronouns builds awareness, promotes conversation, and encourages education. It is our hope that normalizing the act of sharing pronouns will create a safer and more inclusive environment for everyone.

There is a quote by Steven Huang, Head of Diversity and Inclusion for Culture Amp, that sums up the importance of sharing personal pronouns: “Starting the conversation at an organizational level about understanding and using people’s correct gender pronouns helps ensure an inclusive culture where all voices are given equitable power.”

As an organization, we’re happy to be sharing our pronouns in our email signatures and including space for clients to do so, as well. If you feel comfortable and safe doing so, we encourage you to consider sharing your own pronouns in public settings, too!
